New, but not brand new.

After the departure of Tony Dinapoli, Rockingham Junior
High School's band director stepped in to fill his role.
Joe Allison
Mr. Allison spent a very successful season as Mr. Dinapoli's
assistant director for the Raiders' 1979 season.

One of the few times a drummers hands are still is when
they're posing for a photo.

Lay down your weapons and no one gets hurt.... |

Drum Majors
Arthur Bowler and Sally Till
If you joined the Marching Band a few years after this season,
Arthur may look familiar even though he graduated in '81. That's
because his younger brother Virgil, who graduated in '84, was a member
of the Raiders' drum line.

Taking The Field
George Lucas And John Williams Eat Your Hearts Out...
...because with The Empire Strikes Back as their drum solo this year, the Marching Raiders left movie theater sound systems sounding pretty shabby.
Hey, maybe that's why George developed THX?

"Ok, what did Butch say I should remember to do here? More importantly,
what was the girl's name who said she'd save me a seat on the bus?"

Don't think marching is dangerous?
The recently injured Jay Boyette stands on the sidelines wishing she were leaning on her rifle
and not her crutches. |

Throw, catch, spin, repeat.
As easy as washing your hair if you follow the directions, and
if you spend hours on end during the summer and your school weeknights
practicing. |

There is nothing like the feeling of
victory!
It makes you run, it makes you scream, and most of all it
makes you work hard, so you can feel it again, right Larry Harrelson?

Feels Like The First Time!
The Marching Raiders made a clean sweep of all the
day's events at Florence, SC including being named the Best Band of The Day.
This picture was taken while the Raiders were still on the field, just after the trophy announcements.

Kelly Mills, Larry Harrelson, Wayne Foreman, Willette Jordan, and
Paula Arnette.

Pull WHAT?!?
I don't know what that smell is in the back of the band truck, and I'm not going
to hang around to find out! |
Pull It In!
Lets talk about how to make it better the next time.
It's amazing how many people I can recognize from the full
sized photo.

Another year and yet another group of students who volunteer what little free time
they have left after school and band practices to load and unload the band truck.

Marching Raider assistant directors Mark
Reese and Dennis Carswell 'ham it up' with the ladies,
Beth Langley (mellowphone), Julia Todd (flute),
and Becca Dodd (mellowphone). |
Y'Know.....
They weren't much older than us.
|
Reese was the director of Rockingham Junior High
School's band (he helped me switch over to the tuba in the 9th grade),
and Carswell was the director of Hamlet Junior High School's band and
would eventually move into the Marching Raiders director's
position to replace Joe Allison in 1981. |
Marcus West knows Band Jackets Rule,
and not only do the ladies like them, but they also help with your chances of
making the Treasure Chest

Just Hangin'
Out
Lori Lefler and
Anne Tyson pretend to look over homework.

Are you talking to me?
That last minute look at homework just before class was a hallmark
of the Marching Raiders work ethic. Just ask Toni
