Article from the Treasure Chest

Being a member of the RSHS band can be rewarding and exciting.  The Marching Band follows the football team through the entire season, and competes in various band festivals throughout the season.  Band members work very hard starting early in July and going through the football season playoffs.  Band member, Deena Herrick shares, "Marching Band is very exciting. Camp was fun.  I didn't mind getting up early for practice."

Along with football games, pep rallies, and the big bonfire, the Marching Band went to Hattisburg, Mississippi, where it placed third in the Bands of America Contest.  The Marching Band also participated in the Homecoming Parade and the Christmas Parade.

Mr. Andy Gibson, in his second year at Richmond, is pleased with the accomplishments of the band and plans to make next year another of the best.

The 1989 Raider Band Festival

After many years announcing the Raider Band Festivals, Jimmy Smith decided to step down. He suggested, as a replacement, a friend, former co-worker, and ex-Raider who might be interested in doing the job. Might be? Was he kidding?

It was surreal introducing the Raiders as they marched onto the field that night wearing the uniforms that had first been worn by the band my senior year, and then to have them wait for my command to 'enter the field of competition'.

Remember the feeling of coming onto the field, hearing that introduction and those commands... you know... the hair stands up on the back of your neck, and you get goose bumps? It was exactly the same in the announcer's booth! No one could ever fill Jimmy's shoes, but I had great time this year (and the next) as the announcer for the Raider Band Festival.
