Preliminaries

Saturday Afternoon at WCU Stadium

Fresh mountain air and a really long bus trip, what could have been better?

Marching Practice

Warming up before rehearsing the show.

Warming Up

Getting ready for the day's events with the WCU dorms in the background.

'What is the true purpose of a cumberbun?'

Tim Bennett, Judy Menedez (blue jacket in background), Lewis Riggins, Johnny McLaughlin (back turned), and Ronnie Brigman ponder that age old question.

Loading or Unloading?

We're either getting ready for our preliminary performance or we've finished it, and we're stowing things away until the finalists are announced later this afternoon.

Again, Pre- or Post Performance?

Ambi-shoulder-ous

Sousaphones are designed to be worn on the left shoulder, but behind Ronnie Brigman and Robbie Harrelson, Johnnie McLaughlin is flaunting his gift. (Who is the band wearing red?)

Not Like This

Well this is how the number starts, but it ends with the band's Boogie Down.

Yackety Stix

Basses and drummers up front?
I like it, but then, I've always been a rebel.

One Day In Your Life

Working our way into a straight line for the final push forward at maximum volume.

The Presentation of the Flags

Now We Wait
We've prepared all season, made this long trip, practiced in the cool mountain air, performed a great show, and even had our picture taken to save this day forever, but now... all we can do is wait to learn if we'll go on to the Finals. Wait to see if all this work will pay off. Wait....

The pressure was a terrible thing to endure....

Fortunately we were able to find some small amount of relief by roaming the WCU stadium stands like the herd of wild animals that Mr. Menedez had to come to know and fear!

Then There Were Eight

After the Preliminary Competition the top eight bands are chosen to compete in the Finals, and after the Finals Competition, those eight bands all return to the field one final time.

The Winners Are...

I know the previous year we placed fourth at regionals, and I know we did well this year, but I'm not sure of the final order, so if you have the details, let me know.

Remember Climbing These Bleachers?

I do, and the loooong photo we bought was great, but honestly who the heck makes a 12 X 48 inch frame? I still have mine, and it's been rolled up for 20 years, but you can make everyone's face out as clear as a bell.

These shots aren't as clear, but the larger versions do show some faces.
